Sojourn
Mountaineering International (SMI) is a service of Christian Information
Center, Inc. (CIC). CIC is located in
Otis Orchards, in eastern Washington State, and is a non profit corporation that offers
teaching, fellowship and educational events that make known the good news of
Jesus Christ. The Word of God, the
Bible, is the center of CIC and every SMI adventure. SMI provides a safe experience which calls
for a sustained demand to believe God in situations of challenge.
Steve
Armstrong is president of CIC, Inc, and the director of Sojourn Mountaineering
International. He has many years of
mountaineering and wilderness experience.
Beginning in the early 1970's in Spokane, Washington, with the Spokane Mountaineers, he has been involved
in teaching outdoor skills in California, Colorado
and New Mexico. Steve is a
former member of the American Alpine Club, Alaska Section; former co-director
of the L.E.A.D. Outdoor Academy International in Colorado and New Mexico; hunting guide for Camp Gunnison in Gunnison, Colorado and Jackalope Outfitters in Chama,
New Mexico. Starting with
his own children in 1997, Steve initiated a program to teach mountaineering
skills and provide wilderness adventure to young people. From that beginning Sojourn has grown.
Since
1997, basic to advanced sessions have been conducted in Washington, Idaho, Oregon,
Oklahoma, Arkansas,
California and New Mexico. The people
who have participated have learned many important life-lessons while gaining
knowledge of rock climbing and mountaineering skills. People are able fellowship together in the
wilderness enjoying the adventure and the challenge of each day. This is a truly rewarding educational
experience.
A
series of classes is now being offered;
- Foundational: Introduction to basic rock
craft, etiquette, knots, and rope handling.
- Intermediate: More technical rock
climbing, belay, rappelling and lead climbing.
- Advanced: Backpacking, camping, mountain climbing
and other wilderness skills.
The
classes are tailored to the needs of each group. Other types of teaching will be offered in
areas of interest and need. Sojourn also
travels to various areas to conduct classes, as well as hosting sessions at our
base locations in eastern Washington and Arabela, New Mexico.
Sojourn’s
staff is composed of Christian believers who love people, love to teach, and
who are skilled in mountaineering safety and wilderness skills. Training is an ongoing part of being staff. Each staff member strives to learn personally
and offers to Sojourn years of collective experience and knowledge. Sojourn provides a safe and exciting
adventure for each student.
